Dog and Tree (Animationsfilm/animated short)

Zu Füßen eines mächtigen Baumes in einer gemütlichen Wurzelkuhle liegt eine weiße Hundedame. Sie scheint nicht zu atmen, erwacht aber dann doch und richtet sich auf. Sie bewegt sich recht langsam, denn sie ist schon sehr alt. Mit dem Schwanz voran steigt sie aus ihrem Bett unter dem Baum, der seine Aste schützend über sie gebeugt hat. Was das Ende der Erzählung ist, wird zum Anfang des Films. Rückwärts verfolgen wir das Leben und die Entwicklung der Freundschaft zwischen der Hundedame und dem Baum bis hin zu ihrer Ankunft als Welpe. Es ist eine starke Freundschaft, die verschiedene Verwandlungen der beiden und sogar einen heftigen Sturm übersteht. Eine Freundschaft ohne Ende.

At the foot of a mighty tree, in a cosy root hollow, lies a white female dog. She doesn’t seem to be breathing, but then she stirs and sits up. She moves rather slowly, for she is already very old. Tail first, she climbs out of her bed beneath the tree, whose branches have bent protectively over her. What is the end of the story becomes the beginning of the film. We follow, in reverse, the life and the development of the friendship between the dog and the tree, right back to her arrival as a puppy. It is a strong friendship that withstands various changes in both of them and even a heavy storm. A friendship without an end.

Der Kurzfilm „Karten der Wildnis“ ist ein animierter Experimentalfilm, der auf dem gleichnamigen lyrischen Text der Thüringer Lyrikerin Daniela Danz basiert. Ausgangspunkt ist dabei die historische Landvermessung durch den Mathematiker Carl Friedrich Gauß, der im frühen 19Jh. erstmals die Distanz vom Brocken zum Inselberg in Thüringen errechnete.

The short film ‘Maps of the Wilderness’ is an animated experimental film based on the lyrical text of the same name by Thuringian poet Daniela Danz. The starting point is the
historical land survey by mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who first calculated the distance from the Brocken to the Inselberg in Thuringia in the early 19th century.

1821. Carl Friedrich Gauss and his colleague have achieved the unimaginable – they have surveyed the untamed nature between them and put it into numbers. Everything now seems explainable, orderly and secure. But an approaching storm not only destroys their equipment, but also interrupts the connection between the two of them. Two hundred years later, seven women from different cultural backgrounds are exploring in a poetic film project how we can work together, communicate and relate to nature today.

GERTRUD oder Die Differenz (Experimenteller Dokumentarfilm)

Die Dokumentation zur Schule der Arbeit ist Ergebnis des Forschungsprojektes der Leipziger Künstlerin Ute Richter im Jahr 2021–22. In umfangreichen Archivrecherchen wurden Bildmaterial, Dokumente und Texte zur Schule der Arbeit gesichtet und zusammengefasst.
Nach der Recherche von Ute Richter entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Franka Sachse und Luise Ritter der Film „GERTRUD oder Die Differenz“ als künstlerische Aneignung der vergessenen Geschichte. Der Film öffnet mit animierten Zeichnung den Zugang zum Gebäude und vermittelt in unterschiedlichen Kapiteln die Geschichte der Schule der Arbeit und ihrer Gründerin Gertrud Hermes.  

The documentary on the Schule der Arbeit is the result of the research project of the Leipzig artist Ute Richter in 2021-22. In extensive archival research, visual material, documents and texts on the Schule der Arbeit were sifted through and summarised.
After Ute Richter's research, the film "GERTRUD oder Die Differenz" was created in collaboration with Franka Sachse and Luise Ritter as an artistic appropriation of forgotten history. The film uses animated drawings to open up access to the building and conveys the history of the Schule der Arbeit and its founder Gertrud Hermes in different chapters.

"A shining example of how something simple can convey volumes. The cut-out style is animation in its most basic form with simple shapes, no detail, and no color, yet the expressiveness and emotion the filmmaker/animator manages to convey through these simple building blocks is magical - the twitching of the cat's ears, the changes in the eyes, etc. paired with brilliant sound design.

The film's message (about friendship, differences, opposites colliding) is both explicit and nuanced enough to be open to many readings. The themes and visuals are universal in their appeal (whether you're a 3-year old or a grown-up). It would be wonderful to discuss this film in a forum setting to see how different viewers interpreted this film and what elements stood out and why. How do the themes in this film show up in real life situations (personal and public)? The visual shift to the organic, water-blotch shapes in the background at the end is a wonderful metaphor for how the meeting of opposites can be both beautiful and messy/unpredictable (and that there is beauty in the messiness)."
